Sony VPL-HS20 Review at ProjectorBuyingGuide.com

Behind the explosive growth in the home theater projector market, Sony's Cineza home theater projectors like the VPL-HS20 brings big-screen entertainment with astonishing video detail and strong performance into your home—all at an affordable price! And there's no need to sacrifice portability for better performance: the light, compact design of the VPl-HS20 still allows you to carry it from room to room, or house to house.

The VPL-HS20 leads Sony's Cineza Home Theater projector line, delivering vivid, crisp and smooth images, and can be used on a tabletop or ceiling mounted for screen sizes of 40- to 300-inches. It incorporates three wide XGA LCD panels for 1386 x 788 resolution, and up to 1400 ANSI lumens OEP (Optical Engine Power), optimized for video input content. ANSI measures traditional data projectors' brightness while OEP measures video projector's brightness rating.

The VPL-HS20, Sony's latest high-performance compact home theater projector, features improved brightness and enhanced picture detail over previous models in the line, and creates a dynamic viewing experience in your home theater with improved brightness and contrast. Simple to set up and easy to use, the Sony VPL-HS20 is ideal for large screen home entertainment applications.

Cinema Black Pro
This new breakthrough feature improves contrast by adding simultaneous control of the lamp (low, high) and the iris (on, off) for optimal image quality and contrast level for any screen size and room environment. With the new Cinema Black Pro feature, the VPL-HS20 projector achieves 1300:1 contrast ratio.

Advanced 12-bit Panel Driver
Achieves four times more color gradation than previous models. New I/P converter allows not only video signal conversion, but also high-definition signal conversion that reproduces more image detail and smooth, film-like pictures.

CineMotion® Reverse 3:2 pull-down circuitry for optimum film-based video source display from progressive-scan sources.

Low Fan Noise
VPL-HS20’s fan noise 28dB is the lowest level in the Sony projector lineup. It is barely noticeable, which is critical for home applications.

Optical Engine Power (OEP)
This projectors optical unit has a maximum of 1400 ANSI lumen that is optimized for video content. When compared to a data grade projector showing the same video content, the HS20 has a higher brightness rating.

Input Flexibility
Numerous inputs allow for home theater content to be delivered from such video sources as HDTV sets, VCRs, and standard and progressive-scan DVD players. Providing the latest digital connection, an HDMI interface is included for receiving copy-protected, high-definition video content to be delivered from a DVI/HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) compatible set-top box. It also includes a Memory Stick® media slot for convenient viewing of favorite JPEG images and MPEG1 files. Additionally, the new projector can be connected to a computer using an optional cable.

Side Shot™ 2 Digital Keystone Correction
Offers flexible room placement, allowing the projector to be placed on an angle to the screen, yet still project clear, centered images. This feature expands the correctable area by simultaneously adjusting the image both horizontally and vertically for more accurate, centered correction. It can also help save valuable front-and-center space in the room for viewers.

Micro Lens Array and WV Film
By incorporating these two technolgies, the VPL-HS20 achieves superb High Contrast. The "Contrast Ratio" of LCD projectors is the difference between the On/Off status of the liquid crystal elements, which are in between the two polarizers. As the light passes through the panels the liquid crystal is "On"; which means the light should be shut out. To improve the contrast we implemented 3 main measures. First, we added Micro Lens Array (MLA) to the LCD panel to increase brightness. Then we add Wide View film (WV) to shift brightness (increased by MLA) for deeper blacks. Third, we modify the optical unit to reduce the light leak more than usual.
