Projector Data Input and Output Ports

The more expensive a multimedia projector is, the more input/output ports it's likely to have. Here's a quick look at some of the most common options and why you might want them. Remember, all projectors will have at least one "RGB In" port for connecting your computer to it.

Type of port: What it does: Why you may want it:
Additional "RGB In" ports Connects more than one computer Great for more than one presenter. Allows one person to set up while the other is presenting
RGB Out port Allows you to connect a separate external monitor to your projector So the video from your computer can be seen on the projector and on a monitor at the same time
Composite and S-video ports - most multimedia projectors with video capability come with both types of video ports Accepts video signal from both older (composite) and newer (S-video) VCR and DVD players If you plan on using video you must have a video port. Most important for training applications and home theatre.
Component video - some spec sheets refer to component video as Y, R-Y, B-Y or Y PbPr) Accepts video signal from satellite sources Some newer DVD players offer this option in addition to composite and S-video inputs
Audio In Sends audio data from your computer, VCR or DVD player to the projector So your audience can hear sound that's part of your presentation or video recording
Audio Out Sends audio data from your projector to an external sound system If you are in a large room, you may want to connect to an external sound system
